Jamaica’s Next Generation of Sprint Stars Shine in Eugene

Jamaica’s tradition of producing world-class sprinters received another powerful reminder at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as the nation’s young women captured gold in the 4x100m relay.

The Jamaican quartet of Sashana Johnson, Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, Natrece East, and anchor Shanoya Douglas combined speed, composure, and strong baton work to cross the finish line in 42.89 seconds, a world U20-leading performance.

The victory came in a dramatic final that saw Jamaica hold off Switzerland and Belgium. Switzerland claimed silver in 43.36 seconds, while Belgium secured bronze in 43.91 seconds. Belgium’s performance also represented a national U20 record and the country’s first-ever world medal in the event.

Douglas Delivers a Blistering Anchor Leg

The final leg belonged to Shanoya Douglas, who produced one of the defining moments of the race.

Douglas reportedly covered her anchor leg in an extraordinary 10.04 seconds, helping Jamaica regain control after Switzerland briefly threatened to take the lead before the final baton exchange.

For Douglas, the relay gold was only part of an impressive championship.

She also earned silver in the individual 100m, running 11.17 seconds behind American winner Mia Maxwell, who clocked 11.14. Jamaica’s Theianna-Lee Terrelonge also reached the 100m final, finishing sixth in 11.37 seconds.

Douglas added another silver medal in the 200m, crossing the line in 22.68 seconds.

Terrelonge Adds Individual Strength

The performance of Theianna-Lee Terrelonge further underlined the depth within Jamaica’s young sprint program.

After contributing to the victorious 4x100m relay, Terrelonge advanced to the individual 100m final and placed sixth in 11.37 seconds. Her presence among the finalists showed that Jamaica’s relay success was built around a group of athletes capable of competing at the highest individual level as well.

Jamaica Also Reached the Men’s 4x100m Podium

Jamaica’s sprint success in Eugene was not limited to the women.

The Jamaican men’s 4x100m team of Kyle Bodden, Gary Card, Nyrone Wade and Sanjay Seymore captured the bronze medal in 39.01 seconds.

The United States won gold in a new World U20 record of 38.16 seconds, while Great Britain and Northern Ireland took silver in 38.90.

Jamaica also celebrated an individual sprint medal in the men’s 100m, with Gary Card taking silver in 10.05 seconds, behind American Tate Taylor’s 9.94.

Strong Performances Across the Relays

The Jamaican women finished sixth in the 4x400m relay in 3:34.28, while the mixed 4x400m team placed fourth in 3:24.70.
Those results added further depth to Jamaica’s showing at the championships, but it was the women’s 4x100m victory that provided one of the meet’s biggest Jamaican highlights.

A New Generation Carries the Jamaican Sprint Tradition Forward

From the opening exchanges to Douglas’s explosive finish, Jamaica’s 4x100m victory was a demonstration of the country’s enduring sprint culture.

Johnson, Terrelonge, East, and Douglas now join a long line of Jamaican athletes who have carried the black, green, and gold onto the world stage.

For Jamaica, the significance extends beyond one gold medal. These young sprinters have provided another glimpse of what the next generation of Jamaican athletics could look like.

And if Eugene was any indication, Jamaica’s sprint tradition is far from finished.
