Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls have etched their names into Commonwealth Games history, stunning world No. 1 Australia before battling New Zealand for gold at Glasgow 2026.

The Jamaica Sunshine Girls delivered one of the most memorable performances in the history of Commonwealth Games netball, defeating reigning champions and world No. 1 Australia 46–45 in a breathtaking semifinal before securing the silver medal after a 56–48 loss to New Zealand in the gold-medal match.

For Jamaica, the result represents another major milestone for a team that has steadily established itself among the world’s elite netball nations.

The netball tournament at Glasgow 2026 featured the leading 12 ranked nations and was staged at The Hydro from July 25 through August 2.

A Semifinal for the History Books

On August 1, the Sunshine Girls faced arguably their biggest challenge of the tournament: Australia, the defending Commonwealth Games champions and the world’s No. 1-ranked netball team.

What followed was a tense, hard-fought battle that went down to the final seconds.

Jamaica held its nerve to secure a dramatic 46–45 victory, sending the Sunshine Girls into the Commonwealth Games gold-medal match.

The result was far more than another win.

It ended Australia’s remarkable run of reaching every Commonwealth Games netball gold-medal match since the sport’s introduction to the Games in 1998. Jamaica’s upset meant the Australian Diamonds would miss the final for the first time in Commonwealth Games history.

A Final-Second Heart-Stopping Finish

With Jamaica clinging to a one-goal advantage, Australia had an opportunity to force a tie in the closing moments.

Australian shooter Sophie Dwyer took the potential game-tying attempt, but the shot missed after the final siren, triggering an explosion of celebration from the Jamaican players and supporters.

For the Sunshine Girls, it was a moment of composure, resilience, and belief.

They had not simply beaten Australia—they had knocked the defending champions out of the gold-medal race on one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth netball.

From Birmingham Silver to Glasgow Glory

Jamaica’s silver medal in Glasgow also continues the team’s remarkable rise at the Commonwealth Games.

At Birmingham 2022, the Sunshine Girls reached their first Commonwealth Games final, eventually losing 55–51 to Australia and taking silver.

Four years later, Jamaica returned with an even bigger ambition: to turn silver into gold.

Head coach Sasher-Gaye Henry-Wright had made that objective clear before the team travelled to Scotland, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, mental toughness, reducing turnovers and executing strategically.

Although the ultimate gold-medal target was not achieved, the Sunshine Girls produced a tournament run that will be remembered for years.

New Zealand Ends Jamaica’s Gold-Medal Dream

After the emotional high of defeating Australia, Jamaica had little time to recover before facing New Zealand’s Silver Ferns in the gold-medal final on August 2.

The final presented a completely different challenge.

New Zealand controlled the contest and ultimately prevailed 56–48, ending Jamaica’s hopes of claiming its first Commonwealth Games netball gold medal.

The Silver Ferns’ victory also ended a 16-year wait for Commonwealth Games gold.

For Jamaica, however, the result should not overshadow what the team accomplished in Glasgow.

Silver, But a Golden Achievement

A silver medal may not have been the colour Jamaica wanted when the tournament began, but the journey to the podium was extraordinary.

The Sunshine Girls defeated the world’s top-ranked team when it mattered most, ended Australia’s historic streak of Commonwealth Games final appearances and once again demonstrated that Jamaica belongs among the world’s netball powerhouses.

The achievement is particularly significant because Jamaica has steadily transformed itself from a competitive netball nation into a genuine title contender.

The team’s Commonwealth Games history reflects that progression. Jamaica won bronze in 2002, finished third again at Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018, reached its first Commonwealth final at Birmingham 2022 and now returns home from Glasgow 2026 with another silver medal.

A Performance Jamaicans Can Be Proud Of

The disappointment of falling short against New Zealand will naturally linger, especially after Jamaica came so close to reaching the top of the podium.

But the Sunshine Girls have plenty to celebrate.

They showed courage against Australia.

They handled enormous pressure.

They made history.

And they left Glasgow with another Commonwealth Games medal.

For Jamaican netball, this is more than a silver medal. It is another indication that the Sunshine Girls are capable of competing with—and defeating—the very best teams in the world.
