Dancehall artist Squash, born Andrae Maurice Whittaker, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to charges of illegal firearm

Dancehall artist Squash, born Andrae Maurice Whittaker, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to charges of illegal firearm possession while being in the country without legal permission.

The plea agreement, made public on Friday, means prosecutors will drop a separate charge involving an automatic weapon. In exchange, Squash will pay a US$100 fee and could face up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to US250,000. Prosecutors are expected to recommend a lighter sentence, though the final decision is up to the judge.

Court documents reveal that Squash confessed to being found with a loaded Glock 19 handgun during a traffic stop in Miami Beach on February 24. He also admitted to entering the United States illegally in January 2021.

The conviction is considered a deportable offense, which means Squash may be removed from the U.S. after his sentencing. A date for the sentencing has not yet been set.
