As a precursor to the event, on Wednesday, September 19, the AFJ hosted a media event at a party at the elegant East Side residence of Ambassador Brenda LaGrange Johnson, president elect.

For the intimate private affair, guests included superstar Orville ‘Shaggy’ Burrell, Olympian Shelly Ann Fraser-Pyrce, former consul general Geneive Brown Metzgar, members of the AFJ board of directors, media representatives from BET, Billboard, Pat McKay from Sirrus FM,Jamaica.com, multimedia journalist and producer Patrick Riley and sponsor Victor Lewis of VicRae Inc, VP Records, and Barcardi USA, Inc.

The agenda was to promote the 31st annual Hummingbird Gala and Benefit. Executive director of AFJ, Caron Chung, briefly shared the AFJ’s mission and successes as she revealed plans for the extravagant gala.

Fraser-Pyrce, who was in New York for a week of scheduled events, graciously signed a pair of Nike sneakers which will be available at the silent auction on the night of the gala.

The momentum was high and journalists got a chance to learn more about the work of AFJ.

“The comments of the journalists indicate interest and our further success depends on advocacy through raising awareness about the AFJ’s mission, our programmes and milestones,” said Chung.
